Gavan Duffy Park was a hive of activity on Saturday, September 27, as the club hosted the Brendan Óg Ó Dufaigh Memorial football blitz, ‘Féile Peile Ógie’. The event, held in memory of the late Brendan Óg Ó Dufaigh, was a celebration of youth football and community spirit, which fittingly honoured the memory of a young man who inspired so many during his life. A total of 24 teams U-12 teams travelled to Gavan Duffy Park for a full day of football, with teams from across Ulster, Leinster and Connacht showcasing their skills, teamwork and love for the game. The atmosphere was clear from the early morning parade of teams right through to the presentation of medals in the afternoon.
Brendan, Esther, Claire and Áine Ó Dufaigh were warmly welcomed to the club and presented medals to all participating players, adding a special poignancy to the day. Their presence reminded everyone of the true spirit of the tournament, honouring Ógie’s memory by giving young players the opportunity to play, compete and enjoy the game he loved. Club volunteers worked tirelessly throughout the day, serving refreshments, stewarding, and coordinating games across six pitches. Their efforts ensured that the more than 800 people in attendance, players, parents, mentors and supporters, enjoyed a safe and enjoyable day. Thanks also to all the clubs who travelled to take part in the blitz. Along with two Harps teams, we welcomed fellow Co Monaghan clubs Aughnamullen, Clontibret, Cremartin, Currin, Drumhowan, Emyvale, Inniskeen, Latton, Scotstown, Seán McDermotts & Truagh, as well as Micheal Glaveys (Roscommon); Naomh Muire(Donegal); Lavey (Derry); Crossmaglen, Dromintee, Granemore, Madden & Middletown (all Armagh); Burren (Down); Newtownbutler (Fermanagh); and Cúchulainn Gaels(Louth). The inaugural Cup winners were Truagh, who saw off Clontibret in the final, while it was similarly competitive for the Shield and Plate, where Lavey and Latton edged out Scotstown and Granemore, respectively.
